Assessment of the epidemiological situation **
Although a surveillance system was established in 1986, sentinel surveys were conducted irregularly between 1986 and 1995, sites were used inconsistently and the system stopped functioning altogether in 1996 until 2002 when surveillance resumed.
HIV prevalence rates among women attending the same two antenatal care clinics in the capital Libreville increased from 3.8 percent in 1995 to 9.0 percent in 2002.
A survey of the general population in four cities in 2000/2001 reported HIV prevalence rates of 7.7 percent in the capital Libreville; 9.0 percent in the economic ands trade centre of Port-Gentil; 3.8 percent in the river-side town Lambaréné 300km east of Port-Gentil, and 3.8 percent in Franceville in the south east, close to the border with the Republic of Congo.
** Information taken from UNAIDS/WHO epidemiological fact sheets on HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections, 2004 Update, The Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria and various UN databases.
