Assessment of the epidemiological situation (2004)
Although HIV sentinel surveillance among women attending antenatal care clinics was established in 1989, the system was disrupted by war in 1996 and only re-established in 2000. In 2002, three sites in Brazzaville and two sites in Pointe-Noire were used.
In 2000, HIV prevalence in Pointe Noire was 14% . Between 1996 -2000, HIV prevalence in Brazzaville remained at about 5%.
In Brazzaville, median HIV prevalence rates remained stable between 2000 (4%) and 2002 (3.6%). The median HIV prevalence rate in Pointe-Noire decreased from 14.6% in 2000 to 5.2% in 2002.
In 1987, sex workers tested for HIV in Brazaville and Pointe Noire had HIV infection rates of 34.3% and 64.1% respectively.
