The Government of the United States (US) announced on Tuesday that it will invest about $80 billion (€68 billion) in the construction of new nuclear reactors to generate electricity.
The agreement aims to strengthen the country’s energy system, “create well-paid jobs and place the United States at the forefront of the nuclear renaissance,” said the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, quoted in a press release.
According to the manufacturer Westinghouse, the partnership with the U.S. government will accelerate the development of nuclear energy and respond to the growing demand for electricity to power data centers, especially those dedicated to artificial intelligence.
The agreement is an extension of an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in late May, which aims to build 10 conventional nuclear reactors by 2030.
