The liberalized electricity market totaled about 5.8 million customers in June and an annualized consumption of 46,465 gigawatt-hours, a year-on-year increase of 1.9% in customers and 3.8% in consumption.
According to data released today by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE), the liberalized electricity market gained 10,324 customers in June compared with May, to 5,849,761, while the regulated market lost 2,965 customers, for a total of 779,152.
In June, 70,359 customers switched suppliers in the liberalized market.
By the end of June, consumption in the liberalized market accounted for 88.2% of the total number of customers and 95.4% of consumption in mainland Portugal.
In market share terms, EDP Comercial remained the leading operator in the liberalized market, both in the number of customers (58.4%) and in consumption (38.8%). Compared with May, the share fell by 0.2 percentage points in the number of customers and rose by 0.4 percentage points in terms of consumption.
Endesa also reduced shares by 0.2 percentage points versus the previous month, while Goldenergy, Iberdrola and MEO Energia recorded increases between 0.1 and 0.2 percentage points.
Year-on-year, EDP Comercial was the distributor that lost the most share of customers (1.4 percentage points) and Iberdrola the one that lost the most share in consumption (3.2 percentage points).
Conversely, MEO Energia was, year-on-year, the distributor with the largest gain in customer share (1.1 percentage points), and Galp the one that gained the most share in terms of consumption (2.8 percentage points).
In June, Goldenergy was the distributor that achieved the largest absolute gain in customers, having won about 44% of the number of customers who switched distributors, which represented a net gain in the customer base of 1.8% relative to the previous month.
MEO Energia was the distributor with the second-largest share of customer acquisition, having gained 28% of the number of customers who switched distributors, with a net gain in the customer base of 2.5% relative to May.
Iberdrola and Repsol were third and fourth in customer capture, both with a 9% gain in the number of customers, while EDP and Endesa recorded customer losses.
In an analysis by customer segment, among residential customers the lead is held by EDP, which reduced its share by 0.1 percentage points versus May (53.4% of consumption).
Endesa and Galp also reduced their shares by 0.1 percentage points, compared with the previous month.
Goldenergy, MEO Energia and the group of distributors grouped under the “Others” category increased their share by 0.1 percentage points, compared with May.
Compared with the same month last year, Endesa recorded the largest loss of share in consumption in this segment (1.3 percentage points), with MEO Energia showing the largest gain (1.2 percentage points).
In the small business segment, EDP’s share fell by 0.1 percentage points, continuing to be the distributor with the greatest consumption share (46.7%).
In June, EDP remained the distributor with the greatest share of consumption in the industrial customer segment (27.2%), remaining stable versus May. In the large consumer segment, EDP moved to lead the segment (25.1%), having increased its share by 2.4 percentage points compared with May.
Market concentration decreased by 0.6 percentage points in the number of customers and recorded an increase of 1.0 percentage point in terms of consumption, compared with the previous month.
