July 18, 2026

The Góis City Council approved in a meeting held this month the implementation of an operation, with a budget of around 464 thousand euros, to rehabilitate the forest areas ravaged by storm Kristin.

The Integrated Landscape Management Operation (OIGP) 2.0 is funded 100% by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), and is directed toward an intervention area of about 25,000 hectares, of which about 80% are forest, the Góis City Council said in a press release sent to the Lusa agency.

The OIGP 2.0 in that inland municipality in the Coimbra district focuses “primarily on the around 369 hectares of forest stands severely affected by the storm,” it clarified.

The operation will be divided into four intervention units, covering the entire municipality.

“The action plan will focus on reducing the risk of fires and phytosanitary threats caused by the accumulation of deadwood,” the municipality stated.

According to the local authority, among the main planned measures are the cutting and removal of trees fallen or damaged by the storm, the management of biomass and forest residues, and the restoration of 85.5 kilometers of forest roads.

“In addition to direct actions on the ground, the operation also provides support to forest owners who carry out eligible interventions, provided they are registered on the platform of the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF),” it added.

The operation is coordinated by the municipality of Góis.

The OIGP 2.0 are an instrument created by the Government after the passage of Storm Kristin to support affected municipalities in removing windfallen timber and in clearing roads and forest paths.
