The Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, acknowledged today that the disorganization of Portugal’s forest territory contributed to the more than 15,000 hectares that have burned in the country over the last five days.
“It is evident that many hectares have already burned, but that also has to do with the disorganized forest territory that we have. There is a long way to go,” Luís Neves told reporters in Castro Verde, Beja district, after a meeting at the municipal chamber and a visit to the local GNR post.
More than 15,000 hectares have burned in Portugal over the past five days, with the burned area doubling between July 1 and July 5, according to provisional data from the Integrated Rural Fire Management System (SGIFR) consulted by the Lusa news agency.
