The BBGreentyre project, which envisages the establishment of an industrial hub in the municipality of Santarém, has obtained National Interest Project (PIN) status, in an investment of 119 million euros and is expected to create more than 100 jobs.
According to information released today by the Santarém City Council, the recognition was conferred by the Permanent Commission for Investor Support (CPAI), a body coordinated by the Agency for Investment and External Trade of Portugal (AICEP), taking into account the strategic relevance of the project.
The investment will be carried out in two phases, with 88 million euros allocated to the first stage, an amount that supported the request for PIN status.
The completion of this phase is scheduled for 2029, while the second phase is expected to come into operation in 2031.
According to the municipality, the future industrial unit will have the capacity to valorise around 30,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres per year, using a continuous chemical pyrolysis process developed by the promoting company.
From this process will emerge products such as recovered carbon, tyre pyrolysis oil, and process gas destined for the installation’s own energy consumption, products that contribute to “the valorisation of waste and to the principles of the circular economy”.
The municipality also states that the project will create more than 100 direct jobs and could generate around 300 indirect jobs, “constituting a contribution to the economic dynamism of the municipality and the region”.
The Santarém City Council followed the application process and issued a favorable opinion during the CPAI meeting in which the project was considered, defending the potential of the initiative to “promote employment, investment and industrial innovation”.
According to the municipality, the awarding of PIN status will allow closer oversight by public administration bodies and faster administrative processing, while maintaining the obligation to comply with the applicable legal and environmental requirements.
The municipality believes that the installation of this industrial unit reinforces Santarém’s attractiveness for innovative and sustainable industrial projects, consolidating the strategy of attracting private investment to the municipality.
