NIGERIA: HIV prevalence rate hits one-million mark
At least one million people in Nigeria's most populous city, Lagos, are living with HIV or are in the advanced stages of AIDS infection, state health officials have said.
According to Agence France-Presse, the Lagos health commissioner, Leke Pitan, said a dozen HIV testing centres would be opened on 1 June in Lagos state where an estimated 16 million people reside.
The country's federal health minister, Eyitayo Lambo, revealed recently that some 2.3 million Nigerians had died of AIDS-related illnesses, while 3.8 million others were living with the HI virus.
