NIGERIA: Millions of condoms bought within months

Figures released recently by the social marketing group, Society for Family Health, suggest that Nigerians bought an estimated 150 million condoms over a period of just three months, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.

A Society official, Damola Ogunbowale, said the increase in condom use, especially by young adults, was encouraging as it contributed to the reduction of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

Ogunbowale expressed regret over the unpopularity of the female condom in Nigeria, and said the Society was determined to popularise its use.

Health Minister Eyitayo Lambo announced earlier this week that some 3.8 million Nigerians in a population of 130 million were living with HIV/AIDS.
