MOZAMBIQUE: Human rights expert decries HIV/AIDS discrimination

A UN human rights expert recently urged Mozambique to translate its health policies into action for the protection of all people living with HIV/AIDS.

While praising the government's drive to raise living standards, Paul Hunt, the Special Rapporteur for the Commission on Human Rights warned that much remains to be done to protect people against the bigotry that accompanies diseases like HIV/AIDS.

In a recent statement from Geneva, Hunt said: "I was shocked to hear first-hand of the extent of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS in Mozambique - people being rejected by their families and workers being fired from their jobs."

Hunt said that while the government had done well to enact anti-discrimination legislation, these laws needed to be "vigorously promoted and enforced."
