GUINEA-BISSAU: Free AIDS treatment underway

Guinea-Bissau has opened its first treatment centre providing antiretroviral therapy free of charge to people living with HIV/AIDS.

The centre is situated at a recently renovated hospital in the capital, Bissau, and will also treat people from other countries in the sub-region.

The former Portuguese colony of 1.3 million people is bounded in the north by Senegal and by Guinea-Conakry in the south and east.

UNAIDS estimated at the end of 2001 that 2.8 percent of all adults aged between 15 and 49 were living with HIV/AIDS.
