ETHIOPIA: Government alarm over HIV/AIDS impact

Ethiopia has expressed concern over the "disastrous threat" of HIV/AIDS to the country's human resources, the Pan African News Agency (PANA) reported on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Information said in a recent statement that the pandemic's "pervasive impact on the social and economic life of the people is looming, and severely undermining our overall development efforts".

Efforts to prevent and control the spread of HIV/AIDS were not sufficient and the ministry called for a national emergency response to the pandemic.

"The task of preventing and controlling the HIV/AIDS pandemic primarily requires the active participation of the whole people ... no one can afford to alienate themselves from the struggle to contain it," the ministry added.
