MALAWI: HIV/AIDS project focuses on media

A US HIV/AIDS project in Malawi is set to build the capacity of the local media in tackling the pandemic, the local Nation newspaper reported on Monday.

The chief officer of the Ministry of Information, Davison Chirwa, said the US $349,000 two-year grant by the National AIDS Commission (NAC) would also support behavioural change interventions among the country's youth and general public.

"This project is based on the premise that enough has been written and said about HIV/AIDS - but what have we achieved? ...it is our hope that this project will encourage that [behavioural] change," Chirwa said.

He said journalists would be trained to collect, analyse and disseminate HIV/AIDS information, while discouraging discrimination against people living with the virus through the media.
