TANZANIA: World Bank approves AIDS millions

Tanzania's HIV/AIDS reduction efforts are set to benefit from a recently approved US $77 million World Bank grant.

In a statement issued from its Washington DC headquarters, the bank said it had allocated the grant over five years to support Tanzania's National HIV/AIDS Programme, which is aimed at reducing the spread of HIV by involving the government, NGOs, civil society and community organisations.

The bank's team leader for the project, Albertus Voetberg, said the financed activities would focus on assistance to vulnerable groups, including people living with HIV/AIDS, orphans and the youth.

Voetberg said: "This project will support activities in the priority areas of prevention, and the mitigation of the health and socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS at individual, household and community levels."
