NIGERIA: Education a weapon against AIDS - minister

Nigeria's ministry of education has called for a teaching process that includes HIV/AIDS education, the local Daily Trust newspaper reported on Tuesday.

While addressing a recent five-day HIV/AIDS education workshop, the ministry's permanent secretary, Godfrey Preware, said education was a potent weapon in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

"The education sector has a critical role to play in the fight against HIV/AIDS, considering the high prevalence rate among the country's youth," Preware said.

Recent figures estimate that 6.3 percent of all adult Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 29 are living with HIV/AIDS.
