GHANA: More volunteers to tackle HIV/AIDS

Ghana is to benefit from 1,000 new US Peace Corps volunteers being mobilised to fight HIV/AIDS in targeted African and Caribbean nations, the local Accra Mail reported on Monday.

This is part of the US $15 billion, signed into law by US President George W Bush on 27 May, for tackling HIV/AIDS abroad over the next five years.

"By committing an additional 1,000 volunteers, the Peace Corps will be able to enhance a number of programmes and expand HIV/AIDS projects in current Peace Corps countries," the programme director, Gaddi Vasquez, said.

The new recruits will join the more than 2,100 volunteers already engaged in HIV/AIDS projects around the world.

"Also, more educational material, written in local languages, will be developed for volunteers to use in their communities," Vasquez added.
