TANZANIA: Cut planned for HIV/AIDS infection rate

Tanzania has intensified its efforts in tackling HIV/AIDS, the Panafrican News Agency (PANA) reported on Tuesday.

A recently launched government initiative aims to bring HIV/AIDS infection rates down to 30 percent by 2007.

Prime Minister Frederick Sumaye said the new strategy, already guiding the HIV/AIDS interventions of various stakeholders, would now also tackle the mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

The most recent UNAIDS report indicates that HIV infection rates among women in Africa are higher than among men.

"We must now intensify the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic with everything we have got. It will be a deadly mistake to allow complacency in the war against HIV/AIDS," Sumaye said.
