REN and Red Eléctrica inaugurate new Portugal–Spain electricity interconnection

REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais and Red Eléctrica, a subsidiary of Redeia, responsible for the operations of the electricity transmission system in Portugal and Spain, will mark the commissioning of the new electrical interconnection between the two countries, according to a press release.

According to the same source, the infrastructure, strategic for Portugal, Spain and for the European Union, strengthens the electrical systems of the two countries and drives the integration of renewable energies, thereby contributing to the progress of the energy transition on the Iberian Peninsula.

The commissioning ceremony of the new interconnection will feature the participation of Rodrigo Costa, president of REN, and Beatriz Corredor, president of Redeia, the parent company of Red Eléctrica. The event will also bring together Portugal’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, Spain’s third vice-president and minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, the Economy and Industry Counselor of the Xunta de Galicia, María Jesús Lorenzana, as well as representatives from the European Commission.
