Porto is one of the five cities selected by the European Commission for the final phase of the European Green Capital Awards 2028, announced today by the Porto City Hall.
On its ‘site’, the municipality clarified that in evaluating the applications received, the independent panel noted that “Porto achieves a high score in all domains of urban sustainability, especially in water management and adaptation to climate change”.
Besides Porto, of the 17 initial applications four are in the running: the city of Aalborg, in Denmark; Bielsko-Biała, in Poland; Košice, in Slovakia and Zaragoza, in Spain.
“Over the last decade, the city has strengthened water resilience and sustainability in urban environments through the modernization of infrastructure, the restoration of ecosystems and active community engagement. Porto adopts a holistic approach to ensure that sustainability efforts reinforce each other,” the panel noted, quoted on the municipality’s site.
Cited in a press release, the Porto City Council’s Vice-President, Catarina Araújo, said that they will continue to work “to show that Porto is not only a city candidate for a European award, but a municipality committed to a fair green transition, with better quality of life for all and with concrete responses to climate challenges.”
