MAR Shopping Matosinhos Invites You to Transform Ceramic Shards into Unique Mosaic Pieces

November 6, 2026

MAR Shopping Matosinhos will host on November 7 the workshop “From fragments to creation: shall we make mosaics?”, an initiative developed in partnership with the LIPOR Academy that invites the community to discover the creative potential of ceramic fragments, transforming unused materials into new pieces through the mosaic technique, announced in a press release.

According to the same source, embedded in MAR Shopping Matosinhos’ strategy to promote material reuse and waste prevention, the workshop offers a practical experience that crosses creativity, reuse, and the circular economy, demonstrating how materials that could be considered waste can gain a new life through art and design.

From fragments to creation

The mosaic is an artistic technique that allows the creation of images, patterns and objects through the composition of small fragments of different materials. Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to work with ceramic fragments, exploring their shapes, colors and textures to create a unique piece.

The session will be led by Filipa Correia, conservator-restorer, designer and founder of “Junta Cacos”, a project dedicated to the reutilization of ceramic fragments through the art of mosaic. Over three hours, participants will be guided in discovering different techniques of composition, learning to combine colors, shapes and textures and to give a new life to materials that, otherwise, could be directed to disposal.

More than teaching a manual technique, the initiative aims to stimulate reflection on the way we look at the materials around us. A ceramic fragment ceases to be merely a shard when it is viewed as raw material for a new creation, highlighting the potential of reuse as a waste-prevention strategy.

The practical component will be at the heart of the experience. Each participant will have the opportunity to create their own mosaic piece and take it home at the end of the session. No prior experience is required, only a willingness to experiment, create and discover new possibilities for materials that have already had a first use.

It is in this context that MAR Shopping Matosinhos and the LIPOR Academy join forces once again to promote an initiative that combines learning and creative expression, showing how ceramic fragments can be reused and transformed into new pieces, avoiding their waste.

Thus the initiative aims to contribute to a shift in how we view waste: before it is discarded, a material can be reused, transformed and integrated into a new creation. In the case of ceramics, fragments gain a second life through mosaic, in an approach that values simultaneously the material, the artisanal process and the creativity of each participant.
