Alentejo Wines Sustainability Program Wins European Funds Awards

November 6, 2026

The Sustainability Programme for Alentejo Wines (PSVA), promoted by the Alentejo Regional Vitivinicultural Commission (CVRA), won the European Funds Awards, in the “+ Green” category. The award was presented on Thursday, 5 November, during the 3rd European Funds Show in Lisbon, and recognises the work developed by the program in promoting sustainable practices in the wine sector, as announced in a press release.

According to the same source, the distinction was awarded within the framework of an initiative that recognises projects supported by European funding and that stand out for their economic, social, environmental and territorial impact. In the “+ Green” category, the PSVA was chosen from five finalist projects.

Created in 2015, the program aims to promote the environmental, social and economic sustainability of Alentejo wine production, encouraging producers to adopt practices that reduce the environmental impact of the activity, improve the use of natural resources and contribute to biodiversity preservation.

“Receiving this prize is a recognition of the work we have been carrying out for more than a decade, together with the region’s producers, who have made sustainability a priority. The PSVA was born with the ambition to promote an effective change in the practices of the Alentejo wine sector, and this distinction demonstrates the importance of a collective strategy, based on knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. It is also an incentive for us to continue working and to find answers to the challenges faced by viticulture,” says João Barroso, coordinator of the Sustainability Programme for Alentejo Wines.

Among the initiatives developed by the PSVA is the creation of the country’s first reference framework for sustainable production certification. The program has also promoted circular economy projects, such as Re:boxed, a wine transport box produced from recycling the label tape, launched in 2025.

More recently, in October 2026, the CVRA presented, in London, the Alentejo Light Bottle, weighing 390 grams. The solution was designed to reduce the consumption of raw materials, the energy required to manufacture glass and the emissions associated with production and transport.

The PSVA has received several national and international distinctions, including The Drinks Business Green Awards, the European Enterprise Promotion Awards, the Sustainability Initiative Award, from the IRGAwards, and the Green Awards, promoted by Visão magazine in partnership with the Águas de Portugal group. In 2024, it also won the V d’Or, in the “Best Joint Initiative” category, which distinguished the program as the best joint initiative in the world wine sector.
