GreenYellow, a multinational company specializing in energy efficiency solutions, solar production and storage, has completed the implementation of 18 photovoltaic solar plants under a self-consumption regime for the Jerónimo Martins Group, under an on-site energy purchase agreement (PPA) with a duration of 15 years, according to a press release.
According to the same source, the plants were installed on the rooftops (rooftop) of Pingo Doce and Recheio Cash & Carry stores, as well as at a unit of the Luís Vicente Group, a producer of fruits and vegetables. They are now operational and contribute to reducing dependence on fossil energy sources and exposure to price volatility, while reinforcing cost predictability and operational competitiveness.
By producing energy at the point of consumption, the project also supports the Jerónimo Martins Group’s decarbonization strategy and responds to growing expectations for a more sustainable value chain.
In total, 8 MWp of capacity were installed, with an estimated production of 11.6 GWh per year. This amount of renewable energy allows avoiding more than 1,230 tonnes of CO₂ annually and corresponds to the electricity consumption of more than 3,860 households.
The project spans 18 locations across different regions of the country, including Albufeira, Amadora, Aveiro, Corroios, Lagos, Leiria, Óbidos, Odivelas, Penafiel, Portimão, Póvoa de Varzim, Sines, Sintra, Freixofeira, Torres Vedras and Vilar do Pinheiro, reinforcing Jerónimo Martins Group’s sustainability strategy, as well as GreenYellow’s strong ability to implement across multiple assets and locations.
GreenYellow’s model is based on its own investment and a turnkey offering, which includes engineering, supply, installation and operation and maintenance throughout the contract period with the clients. This approach enables scaling projects and deploying at multiple locations, tailoring the solution to the specifics of each unit and accelerating the execution schedule in the face of dispersed or solely internal development.
This project with the Jerónimo Martins Group is also an example of how GreenYellow intends to continue decarbonizing Portugal’s commercial and industrial sector, making the energy transition more accessible, faster and more efficient.
“In the retail sector, energy is one of the largest operating costs and a key determinant of competitiveness. By producing renewable electricity directly at the point of consumption, we give our clients long-term cost predictability and greater independence from the grid — two strategic assets in a context of high volatility. This project with the Jerónimo Martins Group demonstrates GreenYellow’s unique ability to operate at scale, implementing dozens of plants across multiple locations, with a single end-to-end partner,” says Luis Almeida, General Manager for Portugal at GreenYellow.
