Up to 33% of Frog Habitats Could Dry Up This Century

October 24, 2026

According to researchers from Australia and international partners, by the end of the century, about 33% of frog and toad habitats could become arid, increasing pressure on an already threatened class of animals.

The researchers found that if global temperatures rise by 2 degrees, about 6.6% of frog and toad habitats will become arid, but if temperatures rise by 4 degrees, arid conditions will affect about 33.6% of the areas where they live.

They also observed an increase in habitats exposed to worsening drought, especially in Australia. The authors state that the results highlight the combined threats of warming and environmental dryness that frogs and toads face.
