Common Areas at MAR Shopping Matosinhos and Algarve with 100% Renewable Electricity

June 19, 2026

In the past year, the common areas of MAR Shopping Matosinhos and MAR Shopping Algarve were powered by electricity from 100% renewable sources.

In a press release, Ingka Centres, the management entity of these two shopping centres, states that in the case of the Algarve shopping centre, located in Loulé, 27% of the electricity required for operation was produced through a local photovoltaic installation. The company says this contributed to reducing dependence on external energy sources and to “the promotion of more sustainable energy production solutions.”

Regarding waste management, MAR Shopping Algarve recorded a recycling rate of 70%, with 17% of that volume directed to composting, “reinforcing the commitment to waste valorization solutions and the circular economy,” says Ingka Centres.

As for MAR Shopping Matosinhos, in Leça da Palmeira, 20% of the electricity consumed in 2025 was generated on-site, through a solar panel installation. The energy consumption was 6% lower than that recorded in 2024, with an accumulated decrease of 23% since 2019.

According to the management company, last year the shopping centre sent no waste to landfill, “recording a recycling rate of 74.2%, of which 30% were transformed into natural fertilizer.”

Ingka Centres also says it promoted a positive social impact within local communities. Through partnerships with non-governmental organizations, representative bodies and local entrepreneurs, initiatives were promoted that “contributed to improving or transforming the lives of 330 people,” the company notes, involving 2,102 participants in social impact actions.

“At Ingka Centres we strive to ensure that our Meeting Places actively contribute to a more sustainable development model, through the use of energy from renewable sources, continuous improvements in waste management and the creation of a positive impact in the communities where we are present,” says Mário Barros, Centre Markets Manager for Southwestern Europe at Ingka Centres.
