Coimbra Launches Geology Award to Support Students and Highlight Geology as a Key Field for Sustainability

June 19, 2026

The Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) created the Geology@UC Prize to promote access and retention in higher education in this strategic scientific field.

In a statement, the academic institution explains that the distinction will be awarded to up to 20 students enrolled in the first year of the Geology degree at this faculty. The candidates are ranked in decreasing order of the grade with which they entered the course.

The Geology@UC Prize, as detailed by FCTUC, consists of the allocation of financial support equivalent to the amount of the annual tuition fee.

For the Department of Earth Sciences of that faculty, where the Geology degree is housed, this is a way to value Geosciences and to “incentivize the training of new qualified professionals in an area fundamental to understanding natural resources, the mitigation of geological risks, environmental sustainability and the energy transition.”

Applications for the prize will commence once admissions to the faculty for the next academic year have closed, after which a page on the department’s website will be activated where students may register.
