SOUTH AFRICA: The trials and tribulations of community involvement in research

Francinah Ndala, pastor and chairperson of the township Ladies Forum, is no ordinary member of the community; she is a statuesque woman with a slightly intimidating air, who proclaims that "when I talk, everybody listens". Altogether an ideal candidate to participate in the community advisory group for microbicide clinical trials in Soshanguve, a township outside South Africa's capital, Pretoria.

GLOBAL: UNAIDS counts the cost of universal access

UNAIDS has attached a price tag of US$42 billion to achieving the goal of universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010, more than four times the amount currently being spent on fighting the global pandemic.

1. Global Fund grant programmes: An analysis of evaluation scores, The Lancet

Authors reviewed the Fund’s performance ratings of 140 grant recipients as part of its renewal process. The authors then performed a detailed analysis of statistical correlations between performance ratings and a variety of possible contributory factors.

2. Health Systems Trust Conference 2007, 10 to 11 October 2007, Johannesburg, South Africa

The Health Systems Trust will be holding a conference with key stakeholders to celebrate 15 years of our work in strengthening health systems in southern Africa. A panel of external experts will be invited to formally review our recent programmes of work during this conference. Topics include research, district support and community development, and knowledge management.

VACANCIES

1. HIV/TB Programme Training and Advocacy Officer, AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa (ARASA), southern Africa

Responsibilities


  • Raising regional and international awareness about HIV and TB treatment and prevention

  • Developing and implementing advocacy campaigns

  • Writing and developing materials on HIV and TB treatment and prevention

  • Co-ordinating activities on HIV and TB treatment, care and prevention literacy and advocacy among partners in different countries in the Southern Africa

  • Communicating with partners and building new partnerships in the region

Requirements


  • A degree in public health, law, human rights, communication studies or any other appropriate qualification

  • Appropriate experience may be considered in place of a degree

  • Five years experience in successful implementation of civil society programmes in HIV/AIDS and/or TB in the region

  • Advanced understanding of the science of both diseases and the linkages between health, governance and human rights.

  • The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate consultative processes.

  • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, internet and email is essential.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, research and analytical skills are required.

2. Regional Technical Advisor for HIV and AIDS, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), West Africa

Responsibilities


  • Provide strategic direction to CRS’ HIV programming in West Africa through the update and implementation of the regional HIV strategy.

  • Support development and expansion of quality HIV programmes, particularly by assisting CRS country programmes in accessing US Government funds and other health funding.

  • Coordinate with other West African regional technical advisors (RTAs) to ensure integration of HIV in all CRS development and emergency programming

  • Research and provide information to CRS country programmes on HIV funding opportunities.

  • Provide technical support through reviews, visits, and online support to CRS country programmes and regions for either HIV project planning and design, grant proposal development, project management, evaluation and review

  • Develop systems to regularly disseminate information on best practices and lessons learned in health programming

Requirements


  • Advanced degree in public health or health-related field required.

  • Five years field experience in international health development and/or HIV programming, preferably in Africa, and should include programme management experience

  • Demonstrated capacity to understand and advise on critical technical and operational issues related to HIV prevention, care, and mitigation and mainstreaming

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity

  • Ability to work in the area of HIV within the related context and principles of the Catholic Church

  • Excellent quantitative analysis skills.

  • Fluency in spoken and written French and English.

  • Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint presentations, spreadsheets and budgeting.

  • Willingness to travel extensively and on short notice.
