Sintra Opens New Solidarity Garden and Allocates 50 Plots for Organic Farming

July 1, 2026

The Sintra City Council will allocate 50 agricultural plots in the new Mira-Sintra Solidarity Garden, located in the Urban Park, in the Union of Parishes of Agualva and Mira-Sintra.

The initiative is part of the Sintra Solidarity Gardens Program and is intended for residents and local entities, promoting the cultivation of vegetables and aromatic plants in organic production, contributing to family self-sufficiency, social inclusion and the promotion of healthy habits.

Marco Almeida, president of the Sintra City Council, stressed that “this project represents much more than the provision of land for cultivation. It is a concrete response in the social field, promoting inclusion, well-being and quality of life for people, while encouraging sustainable practices and contact with nature.”

Of the 50 plots now allocated, 49 are intended for selected candidates and one plot will be used under the European NATURELAB project, dedicated to therapeutic horticulture.

The creation of the Mira-Sintra Solidarity Garden fits into a municipal strategy to support people in more vulnerable situations, valuing urban agriculture as a tool for social cohesion and sustainable development.

Marco Almeida also adds that “we want to continue investing in projects that strengthen proximity to residents and generate a positive impact in communities. Solidarity gardens are a clear example of this vision, combining environmental sustainability, solidarity and civic participation.”

Beneficiaries will now be notified to formalize the use agreements and will have access to training activities in organic farming, promoted by the Sintra Municipality, strengthening the capacity of users and sustainable management of the spaces.

With this measure, the Sintra City Council reinforces its commitment to public policies that promote social inclusion, sustainability and the well-being of the population.
