The Municipal Chamber of Sintra will proceed with investments totaling two million euros in water supply, sanitation, and waste collection, through the rehabilitation of the Terrugem Reservoir, the remodeling of the Montelavar Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), and the acquisition of 750 more containers intended for selective waste collection, it was announced in a press release.
According to the same source, this investment is being carried out through the Sintra Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS de Sintra) and aims to respond to detected needs, to reinforce the quality of the water supplied, as well as the treatment of water directed to the Sintra streams and the waste collection service.
The highlight is the 750 new containers, within the scope of selective collection (paper/cardboard, plastic/metal and glass), which complements the recent acquisition of 700 two-way loading containers, worth 2.3 million euros, intended for the collection of undifferentiated waste.
The remodeling of the Montelavar WWTP will improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment for the towns of Montelavar, Pêro Pinheiro, Morelena, Fação, Lameiras, Armês, Maceira and Anços.
Located beside the Ribeira do Adrião, a tributary of the Lizandro River, the Montelavar WWTP has been in operation for more than four decades, initially sized for nine thousand inhabitants and expanded in 2005 to serve 18,000 inhabitants, and requires rehabilitation of the first and second treatment lines.
In the area of water supply, the focus is on the requalification of the Terrugem Reservoir, an intervention that is part of the strategy to improve the water storage facilities that integrate the SMAS de Sintra system.
To improve the efficiency of the system, including the reduction of water losses, these municipal services have developed a reservoir rehabilitation program, as in the recent Rinchoa, worth 630 thousand euros, and the Gémeos (Monte Abraão) project, which is underway, amounting to 500 thousand euros.
