UGANDA: NGO to give female prisoners HIV/AIDS education

Sisters United Uganda, a community-based nongovernmental organisation, has launched a fundraising campaign to improve conditions for female inmates in the country's largest jail.

"We visited Luzira Prison and saw children and their mothers suffering. We want to conduct health promotions to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases," said Eva Adengo, one of the organisation's founding members, according to the local New Vision newspaper.

Luzira is one of the country's most overcrowded penal facilities, with with one of its wings designed for 600 inmates holding close to 3,000. Uganda's national AIDS policy provides HIV-positive prisoners with free anti-AIDS drugs and special feeding programmes.
