TANZANIA: Give AIDS accurate media attention - activists
The Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS) has urged the local media to give HIV/AIDS issues greater prominence. "Let us strive to communicate accurate AIDS messages with passion," the local Sunday Observer newspaper quoted TACAIDS commissioner Halima Sharrif as saying at the recent launch of a study on AIDS communication in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam. With stigma and discrimination against HIV-positive people still a major concern in the country, Sharrif cautioned the media to avoid sending out confusing messages, and said journalism should go beyond mere reporting when it came to the pandemic.
