UGANDA: Kabale men pressured on VCT
Uganda's Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) is urging men in Kabale district to use the voluntary counselling testing (VCT) services to determine their HIV status.
JCRC chief Dr Muhereza Mukuzi said most men usually avoided VCT and antiretroviral treatment, which were essential to preventing a premature AIDS-related death.
"The number of women who test [for HIV] is high because they are not afraid. I appeal to the men to use the chance to save their lives, and those of their wives," the local Monitor newspaper quoted him as saying.
Mukuzi noted that women made up the majority of the estimated 3,200 people living with HIV/AIDS in the district, but only because they were more willing to use VCT services.
