LIBERIA: President secures free HIV test kits

Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf accepted anti-AIDS assistance by the global pharmaceutical giant, Abbott Laboratories, during a visit to Chicago, US, this week.

Abbott will donate thousands of HIV rapid-test kits and a consignment of antiretrovirals to be used in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

According to the international child welfare NGO, Save The Children, Liberia has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world as a result of the pandemic - some 65 deaths in every 1,000 births.

The Associated Press quoted Africa's recently elected first female head of state as saying, "One has to ensure that our population, particularly our young girls, are protected. This gift today is going to make a major contribution."
