ZIMBABWE: Economic crisis hampers ARV rollout

Foreign currency shortages are hobbling Zimbabwe's efforts to treat thousands of HIV-positive people in urgent need of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs.

Acting director of the National Pharmaceutical Company, Charles Mwaramba, said his firm was struggling to meet public demand for ARVs as a result of the economic crisis.

According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, Mwaramba said: "There are 20,000 people on the national ARV rollout programme and we have less than a month's supply of the vital drugs, and that is not encouraging."

Official figures show that 1.6 million of the Southern African country's estimated 12 million people are living with HIV/AIDS.
