ZIMBABWE: AIDS awareness planned as school subject
Zimbabwe has announced plans to implement HIV/AIDS awareness as an examinable subject from primary to tertiary school levels.
Given the seriousness of the pandemic, said Health and Child Welfare Minister David Parirenyatwa, AIDS awareness should be accorded the same importance as any other subject.
"Just as a child passes English, the same should be said that he or she passed an HIV and AIDS subject," the official Herald newspaper quoted Parirenyatwa as saying.
Zimbabwe is battling to contain one of the world's highest HIV prevalence rates, now estimated at 20.1 percent.
