ZIMBABWE: Govt/NGOs release draft AIDS policy
The draft for a new national HIV/AIDS Strategic Policy has been jointly released by Zimbabwe's AIDS Council and local NGOs, the official Herald newspaper has reported.
Based on past lessons and challenges, one of the new policy's main objectives would be to achieve universal access to AIDS prevention care and treatment over the next four years.
"This strategic framework aims to ensure universal access to treatment, prevention and mitigation services by 2010. Scaling-up of services will be in stages, gradually covering the entire population in need," according to the draft document.
An estimated 600,000 of the 1.8 million Zimbabweans currently living with the HI virus are in need of urgent treatment.
The document is awaiting reaction from the various stakeholders before it is officially adopted.
