MALAWI: US considers extending its AIDS relief
Malawi is one of five additional countries to be considered for funding next year by the US President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a $15 billion anti-AIDS programme launched by President George W Bush in 2003 to tackle AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean.
The US Global AIDS Coordinator, Randall Tobias, was asked by the local Chronicle newspaper why Malawi had not been included as one of the original focus countries, who replied that lines had to be drawn in terms of PEPFAR resource limitations.
Tobias pointed out that in the meantime the country would be receiving approximately $15 million in other funding.
