MOZAMBIQUE: Canada backs UN AIDS orphan support programme
The Canadian government is to grant the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) US $1 million to assist AIDS orphans and vulnerable children in Mozambique.
UNICEF Resident Representative Leila Pakkala told the local news agency, AIM, that the funds would be used for education, health, supplying clean water and sanitation for 25,000 children in five provinces.
Pakkala noted that her agency was counting on government partners, such as community-based NGOs and the Women's Affairs and Social Welfare Ministry for help in implementing the programme.
UNICEF estimates that around 325,000 Mozambican children have lost one or both parents to the AIDS pandemic.
