ZAMBIA: AIDS council announces prevalence reduction plan
Zambia's National AIDS Council (NAC) has announced plans to reduce the country's HIV prevalence rate from 16 percent to 10 percent by the end of the year.
NAC executive director Dr Rosemary Musonda told a local newspaper, The Post, that a recent government allocation of US $2.6 million for the treatment of 10,000 HIV-positive people would speed up the plan.
However, she noted that there was also a need to review the management and distribution of anti-AIDS drugs, as well as treatment guidelines.
The southern African country currently provides treatment to 25,000 people, but hopes to increase this number to 100,000 by 2005.
