ZAMBIA: Japan bolsters AIDS/TB support
Japan this week pledged its continued backing of Zambia's efforts against HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB), a local newspaper, The Times of Zambia, reported.
At a gathering on Wednesday in capital, Lusaka, JICA assistant representative Shiro Kitazawa stressed the importance of TB control to the country's development.
Zambian Ministry of Health figures show that some 58,000 TB patients are currently being treated by means of the 'Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS), which includes free drugs and monitoring for a minimum of six months.
The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been providing TB testing reagents and HIV test kits to the southern African country since 2000.
