ZAMBIA: Possible HIV-positive baby explosion predicted
As many as 40,000 Zambian children will be born with HIV each year without proper AIDS interventions, a senior government official has warned.
According to a local newspaper, The Times Of Zambia, Health Minister Brian Chituwo said the situation was further compounded, with more than 70 percent of rural women forced to give birth at home.
However, Chituwo pointed out that prevention measures were being put in place with assistance from the UN as well as the Danish Fund for International Development.
Some 47 million male condoms were recently procured to tackle the pandemic in the country, which has a current mother-to-child HIV transmission rate of 40 percent.
