ZAMBIA: US millions kick-start new AIDS project
A new Zambian AIDS relief programme, focusing on vulnerable children, received a much needed cash boost from the US this week.
The United States ambassador to Zambia, Martin Brennan, pledged $39 million on behalf of his government during Tuesday's official launch of the 'Reaching HIV/AIDS Affected People with Integrated Development and Support (RAPIDS)' initiative.
He said the programme, which aims to reach at least 350,000 AIDS orphans and vulnerable children in 44 districts by 2010, was the single largest Zambian project funded by the US government.
A local newspaper, The Times of Zambia, quoted Brennan as saying: "RAPIDS has the potential to make a lasting difference in the lives of Zambians affected by HIV/AIDS.
