TANZANIA: Concern over rising AIDS rate during conference
A three-day HIV/AIDS conference, jointly organised by the Tanzania Commission for AIDS, the Tanzania AIDS Society and the Ministry of Health, is currently underway in Arusha, northern Tanzania.
Professor Fred Mhalu, president of the Tanzania AIDS Society, expressed concern over the rapid rate at which the virus was targeting the country's 15 to 49 age group.
"Given this scenario, it has been agreed that there was a need for all sectors of government, civil society, community, families and individuals, uniting and fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic jointly," the BBC quoted Mhalu as saying.
At least 2 million of the country's 36 million population are estimated to be living with HIV and AIDS.
