MOZAMBIQUE: US millions pledged for HIV/AIDS
The US plans to fund 14 centres for HIV counselling and testing in Mozambique, as well as various programmes to prevent transmission of the virus from mother to child, the Portuguese news agency, Lusa reported.
According to the US embassy in Maputo, financial support to tackle HIV/AIDS in 2004 would total over US $22 million.
"The funds represent the continued support of the American people to help Mozambique fight the spread of HIV/AIDS, as well as assist victims of this pandemic", the embassy statement read.
Official statistics show that HIV/AIDS affects over one million Mozambicans, with infection spreading at the rate of 500 people per day.
