GAMBIA: Free AIDS treatment programme launched

A free anti-AIDS drug programme launched this week in Gambia will benefit 150 people living with HIV and AIDS, the country's Medical Research Council has announced.

According to council director Dr Sam McConkey, between 15 and 20 people are expected to be treated in the first phase of the rollout.

McConkey said: "A lot of hard work has gone into getting the drugs here, and my hope now is that we will see a scaling-up of the antiretroviral programme to benefit more people."

The West African country's treatment programme is largely financed by a US $15 million World Bank aid package.
