NIGERIA: Multi-million AIDS agreement signed

An agreement providing Nigeria with a credit facility of more than US $90 million has been signed by the World Bank to support HIV/AIDS efforts in Africa's most populous country.

Jane Miller, the bank's HIV/AIDS specialist, said in a statement, "The credit facility is aimed at ... scaling up government's HIV/AIDS response and providing resources to civil society organisations, in order to achieve an effective HIV/AIDS response."

She noted that resources would be made available to 17 different federal line ministries after the bank had examined their core components.

Nigeria will use the funds to increase the number of its anti-AIDS treatment sites from 25 to 100.
