NIGERIA: US backing for military anti-AIDS treatment

Nigeria has received an offer of assistance from the US to extend the reach of its HIV/AIDS treatment programme to its military.

US Senator Chuck Hagel made the pledge earlier this week in the capital, Abuja, at a joint press briefing with the Minister of State for Defence, Roland Oritsejafor.

According to a local newspaper, PM News, Hagel said the US had earmarked US $600,000 for the provision of new equipment, capacity building, and upgrading military healthcare and HIV/AIDS treatment.

The treatment plan is expected to benefit not only soldiers and their families, but also civilian staff of the Ministry of Defence and people living in Abuja's Mogadishu barracks.
