NIGERIA: Appeal launched for AIDS assistance

Nigeria has launched an appeal for foreign assistance in its battle against HIV/AIDS.

Agence France-Presse quoted Health Minister Eyitayo Lambo as saying, "Right now, we are treating 14,000 people, by the end of next year we want to be able to treat 200,000. We know it is ambitious, but it is doable if the resources are available."

He said Africa's most populous nation would need US $248 million annually to implement its ambitious anti-AIDS treatment plan.

Quoting a recent government-sponsored national study, Lambo said around one in 11 adults living with HIV/AIDS globally was Nigerian.
