ETHIOPIA: Free AIDS drugs for many HIV-positive

Some 150,000 Ethiopians living with HIV/AIDS will receive antiretroviral drugs by 2005, Dr Endalemaw Abera, the World Health organisation's (WHO) AIDS programme head has announced.

The free or low-cost drug distribution is part of WHO's "3 by 5" initiative to provide treatment to 3 million HIV-positive people in developing countries by 2005.

HIV/AIDS experts from WHO's Geneva headquarters and its African Regional Office in Brazzaville, Congo, are expected to arrive in Ethiopia soon to facilitate the treatment programme.
