NIGERIA: Millions pledged to tackle AIDS

The Global Coordinator of the US Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, Randall Tobias, has promised more money to help Nigeria tackle HIV/AIDS.

Nigeria is set to receive US $58 million in 2004 to build special facilities, train health workers and provide preventive counselling and treatment for HIV-positive people.

It is estimated that 3.5 million of the country's 126 million population are living with HIV/AIDS.

Tobias said a large chunk of the funds would be channelled through about 110 non-governmental organisations which had already been identified.
