COTE D'IVOIRE: Cheaper drugs for HIV-positive people

Cote d'Ivoire has announced plans to slash the price of antiretroviral treatment for thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Ministry of Health said the price reduction was made possible with the help of US $14 million from the United States under President George Bush's $15 billion initiative to tackle HIV/AIDS in Africa and the Carribean.

A briefing paper issued by the Ivorian government said close to 80,000 people across the country would have access to the cheaper anti-AIDS drugs by 2008.

Health Minister ALbert Mabri Toikeuse said 2,015 HIV-positive people were already benefiting from the low-cost drugs.
